The Labour Secretary of Philippines Silvestre Bello III and his Qatari counterpart, Isa Saad al-Jafali al-Nuami are scheduled to meet soon to discuss the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Qatar, the Philippine Ambassador to Qatar, Alan Timbayan has revealed.
Bello is expected to raise serious issues such as maltreatment, non-payment or delayed payment of salaries, and other contract violations during the proposed the meeting, Timbayan said.
Other issues that are expected to be on the agenda of the meeting include non-issuance of residence ID or Iqama, confiscation of passports, and contract violation or substitution.
Filipinos all across the Middle East face similar issues, he added.
The leader of a Qatar based OFW group, Loida Singh has said that they are looking forward to the community meeting with Duterte and will be raising other issues faced by OFWs in Qatar, one such issue of importance being the claim that a number of Filipinos are falsely accused by their employers in Qatar and many have no access to lawyers to put up a defence.
Philippine Ambassador Timbayan agreed that some Filipinos currently imprisoned in Qatar claim that they been falsely accused with crimes of immorality as they had run away from their employers. The Ambassador added that these problems were on the agenda of discussion between the two labour secretaries, who are scheduled to meet on Sunday.
