Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, is a painful condition in which the veins in your lower rectum, or anus, get inflamed, leading to severe pain when passing stool. There are two types of piles: internal piles and external piles. Though most people suffer from a single type of piles at a given time, some can suffer from both. The most common causes of piles include chronic constipation, diarrhea, anal intercourse, pregnancy, and the aging process. Piles may cause severe pain, itchiness, bleeding, and irritation even when you are not passing stool due to which you need to look into your diet to treat it as soon as possible.
Drinking enough water is crucial when you have piles in order to prevent stool from hardening, making it more painful to excrete. You can also drink fruit juices for the same effect. Avoid drinks like coffee, tea, and alcohol as they have a diuretic effect on your body and can cause dehydration.
2. Whole Grain Foods
Whole grain foods are great sources of fiber, which aids in bowel movements and makes it easier to pass stool. Such foods include oatmeal, whole wheat breat, bran cereals, whole wheat pasta and brown rice. The less processed the grains are the better. You do not need to load yourself with excess whole grain foods when you are suffering from piles. Just swap refined carbohydrates with them and you’re good to go.
3. Green Leafy Vegetables
Green leafy vegetables are not only high in fiber but also contain antioxidants and a wide variety of nutrients, which aid in digestion. So, include a lot of spinach, cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts in your diet. Other vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, squash, turnips, carrots, celery, cucumber, onions, and zucchini are also good for you when you are suffering from piles.
Make sure to have plenty of beans when you have piles as they are high in fiber and nutrients. In fact, they should be made a regular part of your diet as they are extremely beneficial for your health. You can choose from a variety of options like kidney beans, lima beans, black beans, black eyed peas, navy beans, and much more.
5. Fresh Fruits
Fresh fruits that can be consumed with their skin on are best for you when you have piles. Fruits contain plenty of fiber nutrients that are extremely good for digestion. Prunes, apples, raisin, blueberries, and grapes are the most useful fruits to have when you have piles. Fruits like papaya, banana, grapefruit, cantaloupe, and oranges cannot be eaten with their skin on but they are still good for digestion.
If you are suffering from piles, the food you consume should be warm, nutritious, plain, and not too dry. A bit of clarified butter of ghee can do wonders to help the condition. Try and stay away from red meat, processed meat, and hot spices. But as always consult your doctor before you use our suggestions.
