Couple Who Killed Filipina Domestic Helper Get Death Penalty

The primary suspect to the murder of 29-year-old Joanna Demafelis were sentenced to death by hanging, according to reports in Kuwaiti newspapers.

The Filipina worker was subjected to torture and physical abuse by her employers who were also the primary suspects to her murder.

Lebanese national Nader Essam Assaf and his Syrian wife Mona Hassoun, were found guilty of torture and abuse. The body of Demafelis was placed inside a freezer at the couple’s home in Kuwait.

Assaf locked the apartment and warned the landlord not to open the door as he claimed that there were valuables inside. He also reported to the authorities that Demafelis had run away, before escaping from the country.

The last time that the neighbours saw Demafelis was in November 2016. The body was found by the officers who were serving an eviction notice at the apartment for different case against Assaf. According to reports, she was still alive when she was placed inside the freezer.

Assaf has now said that he was shocked to see the worker unconscious from his wife’s beatings that he wasn’t able to think clearly. He made a blunder by placing the woman inside a freezer, instead of taking her to the hospital.

The Lebanon authorities have arrested Assaf while his wife is imprisoned in Syria. The case was treated in absentia and found them guilty. They were then sentenced to death by hanging. However, the couple can still appeal when they get extradited to Kuwait.
