This world in which we survive is full of wonders. Every day we come across a news article which lives us admiring the ways mother nature works. Every person, though in his/her way is unique. But there are cases which are not just unique fall in the category of one in a million. That’s exactly what happened with Sophia Blake, a black woman, and Christopher, a white man.
A black woman gave birth to a white girl, something which rarely happens!
When Sophia Blake and her husband, Christopher got the news that Sophia was pregnant with their baby, they were more than happy. It must be noted here that Sophia is a black woman by origin whereas, Christopher is white. Just like any mixed-race couple, these two were sure that the baby would have the features of both the parents. But that didn’t happen.
Everyone was shocked when the child Sophia gave birth to was white with stark blue eyes. As per the experts, the chances of having a white girl in such a case is one in a million or probably more minute. The girl, who is now 4 has been named Tiara. As one can anticipate, strangers don’t really believe that Tiara is Sophia’s daughter.
Whereas, Sophia’s first daughter, Donchae, from her earlier relationship with a black man, has acquired the looks of her mother. Talking about the issues Sophia faces being a black woman with a white girl, she says, “I can’t walk down the road with Tiara without someone making a comment.
People simply don’t believe Tiara is my little girl because she looks so completely different. When she was very tiny I didn’t mind so much. But as Tiara has grown older it has become more of a problem. Until I had Tiara I didn’t appreciate how much we all identify ourselves with being white or black – and the issue now is Tiara has a black family but looks white.”
Tiara, being the little girl she is, of course, out of curiosity questions the difference between the two. Sophia tries hard to explain the mixed-race but even she fails at times. Sophia Blake says her family originally comes from Jamaica and also, that the black skin is most dominant. The couple had at least hoped the child would either be like Sophia or somewhat a mix of the two.
The doctors tried to explain the situation which in Sophia’s words are, “Doctors explained it was a million to one chance that Tiara was so white and it was likely there was a white gene in my family which had remained dormant until now.” In general, when a white girl or a boy is born to a black woman, the child has visible features of the black race but with Tiara, it was totally different.
Sophia goes through a daily struggle of explaining to everyone that Tiara is her natural born daughter and not someone she adopted. Even the doctors and teachers at times fail to believe her. Talking about the similarities the mother and daughter duo have, Sophia, says, “We are both extroverts, independent with a quirky sense of humor. And once people get to know us well they say we are very alike!”
