One of the most important part of the wedding vows are “in sickness and in health” and “till death do us part” and looks like these words have no meaning to some married people. Just like for Mitch who did the most horrendous thing!
Love became overrated for newlywed couple Mitch and Courtney Waldron. The Georgia-based couple went out on a fall camping trip that they never expected will change their lives forever.
Mitch and Courtney’s marriage was tested by an accident which later tore them part.
Mitch and Courtney were only married for two months when they went on a trip that was supposed to be a celebration of their love. However, as their campfire flames began to die down, Mitch poured more gasoline on the fire that later went ablaze and burned Courtney’s face.
Courtney lost her beautiful face after her husband accidentally put her ablaze.
While the flame of the campfire kept growing, the flame of their love was about to die. Courtney described the experience saying:
“I was in pain. I was sitting there slapping my face, constantly trying to get it off, get it off.
I stopped dropped and rolled while screaming bloody murder. I thought I was dying.”
Unfortunately, her face wasn’t the only thing Courtney lost from the accident but also her husband who decided to abandon her.
Mitch admitted to his mistake and called 911 for help saying:
“Ma’am, my wife is burning. Please hurry. We had a campfire and it exploded. We need help… It was stupid on my part.”
Courtney was then rushed to the hospital but 40 percent of her face and body was already burned. Her hands also got seriously burnt as she tried to put out the fire out of her face. She had to spend 51 days in the hospital to undergo 20 separate surgeries to fix her face and body. However, despite the procedures, she still remains greatly disfigured.
Courtney recalled the painful feeling of her flesh burning off that night. However, things are yet to get worse after her recovery as her husband was bound to leave her.
Two weeks after Courtney was released from the hospital, Mitch broke his sad decision to her telling he is leaving her to raise her 4-year-old daughter alone. Worse, she has to pay the 2 million dollars worth of her medical bills all by herself.
Courtney was already able to check out of the hospital and went home to the house built for her and her kid by their community members.
Brokenhearted, Courtney said she was still expecting to get an apology from Mitch although she knows that it was just an accident. Mitch then left his wife unable to work and with nowhere for her and her 4-year-old daughter to live.
Fortunately, people who heard about Courtney’s story came together to build her and her daughter a house they could live in. She was also able to start a GoFundMe account where she can get donations to help her pay her medical bills.
Despite the misfortunes that came her way, Courtney came to believe that her husband leaving her was a blessing in disguise. She said:
“I think if [Mitch] was around he would be holding me down. I wouldn’t be as strong as I am today and wouldn’t have made as much progress.
The support I’ve received has been unbelievable. I’m so blessed.
I still see me when I look in the mirror. I know deep down that I am still just as beautiful as I was before.”
