France has appointed former ambassador to both Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Bertrand Besancenot, as a special envoy to resolve the ongoing crisis in the region.

Bertrand has the experience of working in the Middle East thanks to his spell in Qatar and Saudi Arabia earlier.

“I confirm that Bertrand Besancenot, diplomatic advisor to the government, will soon go to the region to evaluate the situation and the best ways to support the mediation and appease tensions between Qatar and its neighbours,” Foreign ministry spokeswoman Agnes Romatet-Espagne told reporters in a daily briefing.

Kuwait has been leading the mediation efforts since the crisis broke out in June when the four Arab ties decided to severe diplomatic ties with Qatar after accusing it of supporting terrorism.
