Qatar, the hosts of FIFA 2022 World Cup failed to make the cut to the 2018 World Cup which will be held in Russia. All hopes when Omar Kharbin of Syria struck twice against Qatar in Malaysia on Thursday.
The result pushed Syria to third place in Group A, Syria has been forced to play all its home matches in Malaysia due to the civil war back home.
The Syrians took full advantage of Uzbekistan’s loss to China and overtook Uzbeks to make it to the playoff picture on goal difference.
Syria made a great start to the game and took the lead in the seventh minute through Kharbin’s goal. Though, Qatar equalized before half-time thanks to Ali Asadallah’s finish, Syria came back strong in the second half to wrap up the game with a 3-1 scoreline.
In a strange scenario, Qatar will now host the World Cup in 2022 without ever managing to qualify for the World Cup finals.
