Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA) after the press conference, Hamad International Airport’s (HIA) Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar al-Baker said announcement of consolidating its platinum sponsorship of FC Bayern Munich demonstrates that the plans of HIA and Qatar Airways have not been affected by the siege imposed on Qatar.
The press conference which was held on the occasion of consolidating the sponsorship contract, al-Baker stressed the importance of the agreement for HIA as the only airport in the world to sponsor a football team, noting that this sponsorship assures the world that life is going on normally in Qatar under an ineffective siege.
The CEO of Qatar Airways, who is also responsible for operating HIA, explained that Germany is Europe’s largest travel market, therefore this sponsorship is important to introduce Qatar and the great potential of HIA and Qatar Airways.
Speaking at the press conference, al-Baker said that the partnership between HIA, which has won major international awards, and Bayern Munich has proven Qatar’s leading role in sports worldwide.
He highliiighted that the HIA logo on the shirts of Bayern Munich players reflects the airport’s important role in adopting sport as a means to bring people together, adding that the sponsorship is in line with Qatar’s ambitious national vision.
The sponsorship contract of the German club extends till 2023.
The shirt of the club bearing the logo of HIA was revealed during the press conference in the presence of Al Baker; Bayern Munich executive board member, Andreas Jung; and Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Secretary General, Hassan al-Thawadi.
For his part, HIA Chief Operating Officer Badr Mohamed al-Meer stressed the importance of placing the airport logo on the shirts of Bayern Munich, the most successful club in Germany.
He added that this growing partnership between the two sides opens up new and exciting scopes within this successful co-operation.
Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) Secretary General, Hassan al-Thawadi, said Qatar’s 2022 World Cup related projects and infrastructure are progressing well according to the schedule and haven’t been affected by the blockade.
In press statements, al-Thawadi said the SC is going ahead with its previously announced plans and wasn’t affected by the siege.
He highlighted that the partnership between HIA and Bayern Munich is evidence that life is going on normally in Qatar and that the sponsorship agreement benefits both sides.
Bayern Munich Executive Board member Andreas Jung said that starting with the new season, the Bavarian club’s shirts will wear the HIA logo.
As a sporting icon in Germany, Jung said, Bayern Munich is the best partner for the five-star airport, stressing that the two sides are on top and aim to stay there.
In this regard, Bayern Munich official store was opened in the duty free zone at HIA, allowing travellers an opportunity to shop for a selection of gifts and goods that bear the logo of the club.
During the event, HIA and Bayern Munich launched the promotional film that shows the airport’s facilities and services for passengers.
The film features Bayern players Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski.
In January, Doha hosted Bayern’s annual winter camp for nine days at Aspire Academy.
HIA recently announced an 8% increase in the number of travellers and 19% increase in cargo handling from January to June 2017, compared to the corresponding period last year.
