Hamad International Airport (HIA) will be setting up more e-gates for easy immigration clearance of residents, said Lt Col Mohamed Rashid al-Mazroui, director of the Airport Passports Department at the Ministry of Interior.
“We have enabled e-gates for Qataris and residents above 18, but unfortunately not all of them are going through the e-gates. Once you use the e-gates, the pressure on the manually controlled emigration counters will come down,” he said at a media event on Wednesday.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar al-Baker said, “We are working with the Ministry of Interior and HIA to double the number of e-gates in anticipation of the influx of tourists.”
HIA aims to facilitate passengers to complete the entry and exit formalities through self-service devices, depending on smart technology, without the need to approach the counter staff.
The e-gates allow the passengers to complete their procedures quickly without standing in queues and waiting for passport officers to verify the data. The process has also saved passport pages to many visitors.
