German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel and his US counterpart Rex Tillerson both have made their stand clear and were against the Qatar blockade by the Saudi-led bloc.
“I and Tillerson worked together to find a solution to the crisis that would spare the Gulf states from the threat of war,” Gabriel told.
“In recent months, the US Secretary of State has shown how European policy and US policy can be more integrated, and that both sides can work hand in hand on many issues,” he said, adding that this was evident in dealing with the Gulf crisis.
He also added that the demands made by the blockading countries were ‘provocative’. Gabriel visited Qatar last month and held a meeting with foreign minister HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani.
He had stressed the need to respect Qatar’s sovereignty and resolve the crisis through dialogue.
Touching on the Libyan issue, the German minister called on the European countries, the Gulf states and Egypt to give priority to Libya’s national interest.
