A video showing an airline stewardess pouring champagne back into a bottle on a plane has provoked the fury of the internet.
The footage, which appears to have been taken in Emirates business class, shows a woman refilling a bottle.
It has been shared tens of thousands of times by outraged commenters, but insiders claim there could be an innocent explanation.
The airline has said it is investigating the footage.
Russian passenger Yevgeny Kayumov filmed it on the upper deck of an A380 while flying business class en route to Dubai.
Tagging Emirates on his Instagram account, he wrote: ‘I accidentally filmed this video, and didn’t even notice this moment at the time, pouring unfinished Champagne back into the bottle.’
He asked the airline: ‘Is that normal practice Emirates?’
Responses from his followers were divided between complaints he might have cost the crew member her job, to one who said there was ‘nothing wrong’ with putting the bubbly back in the bottle.
‘She should be commended for not being careless,’ one person wrote.
‘Someone else could have simply thrown the excess in the sink – which is a total waste. Maybe it could have been more elegant if this action is done in the galley instead of the open bar.
‘But good for her and good for @emirates to have responsible crew like this lady.’
However, this is apparently not how the airline saw it.
A spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Emirates always strives to provide the top quality service. Actions recorded on this video do not comply with our quality standards. We are currently investigating the incident.’
‘Emirates always strives to provide the top quality service,’ an airline spokesperson told Moskva City News.
‘Actions recorded on this video do not comply with our quality standards. We are currently investigating the incident.’
The incident appeared to involve unconsumed complimentary Champagne handed to passengers after they board the aircraft.
On a Reddit thread of the video, some suggested reusing the champagne would be ‘disgusting’.
But others suggested it was likely to be a convenient way of disposing of unused liquid.
One commenter wrote: ‘Hey – I’m a flight attendant – what I think is going on here is that the attendant is probably pouring the unused champagne back in the bottle before take off to then dispose of once the plane takes off.
‘We’re not allowed to pour things out while we’re on the ground. I bet they’re pouring it all back in the bottle so they can then pour it out at cruising instead of dumping it all in the trash can making it all soggy before takeoff…
‘I could be wrong but realistically that’s probably what’s going on. being a flight attendant is all about efficiency and consolidating haha.’
And another wrote: ‘As an airline employee… there is no way they are taking it for themselves or saving it for later (against health codes, employee rules…).
‘She is almost certainly pouring the leftovers back into one container and then will go to the lavatory and pour it all down the sink at once.’
Emirates Airline has been contacted for a comment.
