Qatar bans catching KINGFISH for next two month

The department of Fisheries at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) will enforce a ban on catching Kanaad (kingfish) from August 15.

According to the MME, kingfish can only be caught using hooks and hand line, and the use of nets is prohibited during this period.

The ban will remain in effect until October 15 and is aimed at boosting the stock of kingfish in the country.

The ministry has urged fishermen and operators of fishing vessels to co-operate with it to enforce the ban effectively.

The ministry stated that with the two-month ban it aims to avoid depletion of such an important fish, which is high in demand in the local market, and reduce pressure on the kingfish stock.

Various studies in GCC have shown that the stock of kingfish is under heavy pressure in the region.

Qatar’s government usually appoints group of specially-trained inspectors who will focus on identifying and prosecuting any fishing boats who violate the ban. Officials have also stopped issuing new fishing licenses since long time.
