Just when you thought that the world couldn’t get any sadder or more upsetting, another black male has been shot dead by police for no reason. The tragic incident took place in Falcon Heights in Minnesota and was livestreamed by the victim’s girlfriend on Facebook.
According to reports, Philando Castile and girlfriend Lavish “Diamond” Reynolds were pulled over by police for a broken taillight. But things started to unravel quickly. Reynolds says that her boyfriend told the officer that he was carrying a gun (which he apparently had a license to carry), then the officer demanded to see some ID. As Castile slowly reached for his identification, the officer got jumpy and told him to stop moving. As Castile went to raise his arms again, the officer shot him four or five times in the arm.
When the video begins, we are met with a scene of terror. The officer’s face isn’t visible, but his gun is still pointed at the now heavily bleeding Castile.
Amid the chaos, it’s clear that Castile is bleeding out. His girlfriend can be heard saying “Please don’t tell me he’s dead. Please don’t tell me my boyfriend just went like that.” What makes the whole thing even more harrowing is that Reynolds’ four-year-old daughter was in the back seat during the entire exchange.
Warning: the below video is extremely graphic and may be upsetting
As you can hear during the video, the officer sounds really spooked, yelling “F***!” and then “I told him not to reach for it. I told him to keep his hand out,” to which Castile’s girlfriend retorts that the officer told him to get his ID. The video was originally uploaded to Facebook, but was quickly removed by administrators. Since then however, it has been re-uploaded to YouTube.
Castile’s uncle later confirmed that he passed away at Hennepin County Medical Center at 9:37 pm. It has also been confirmed that the officer to shoot him was a five-year-veteran with the St. Anthony Police Department.
