Prominent places such as Souq Waqif market, Al Khor mall, Katara village witnessed a huge rush of people as Qatar celebrated the first day of Eid yesterday. The places hosted various entertainment events for the relaxation of the people. In the morning people could be seen thronging in large numbers to offer Eid prayers at various mosques and prayer grounds.
Restaurants and shops dealing in ethnic souvenirs located in the traditional market complex of Souq Waqif observed a huge rush of people as many eateries are offering special promotional offers to boost their sales during Eid holidays. The Al-Rayyan theatre located in Souq Waqif hosted the children’s play ‘The Hunter and the Pirates’ at 4:30 PM, the play is scheduled to play at the same time till the end of the holidays.
An assortment of entertainment and leisurely activities organised by the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) at the Katara Cultural Village, the Pearl-Qatar were also commenced attracting people in significant numbers.
Villaggio and Hyatt Plaza malls, similarly saw people thronging in large numbers particularly children as Hyatt Plaza is hosting ‘IftahyaSimsim’ during the holidays. The show has a large following in the Gulf as it has been on air since 1979. In a way it has become part of the cultural tradition, the show is adored by people of all ages as they feel connected to it and brings out nostalgic memories to the fore, therefore, the show was chosen for this year’s Eid programme, a QTA official said.
The festival of Eid is almost synonymous with children’s giggling and happiness and the tradition of adults presenting gifts ‘Eidiyya’ to children. Gift were distributed to children at various places such as Katara Cultural Village making the Eid a memorable one for them.
The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaaf) and Islamic Affairs in conjunction with the Indian community had reserved Eidgahs (prayer grounds) for the purposes of organising Eid prayers. Tens of thousands offered Eid Al Fitr prayers across Qatar on Wednesday morning.
